February 2017 Meeting Minutes


    A motion to approve the minutes from the January Meeting with no corrections was made by Deb Hamling and seconded by Marlene Konsel.  

    TREASURER’S REPORT   The Treasurer’s Report from January was presented by Kathryn Ackman (attached).   A motion to approve the Treasurer’s report with no corrections was made by Deb Hamling and seconded by Mike Ogilvie.  


    A Legislature Update on bills currently being reviewed was distributed (attached). 


    Amanda passed around a Quiz to all those present and encouraged them to go to the CAHRA website to find the answers.  Anyone who brings the quiz back will get their name in the drawing and if your name is drawn, CAHRA will pay your State Conference Registration fee.  State Conference is scheduled for August 24-25 in La Vista. 

    CAHRA will have a table at the Columbus Job Fair which is scheduled for May 17th and sponsored by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce.  We’re looking for volunteers to review resumes and provide interview tips.  Please contact Amanda if you’re interested in volunteering. 

    Shawna Hilbert gave a summary of the HR Leadership Conference attended by Shawna, Jon Rauner, Michelle Meyer and Deb Hamling in January.  It was a great conference and well attended by Board Volunteers from all over the state.

    Reminder:  CAHRA will be giving out two $500 Scholarship Scholarships.  Eligible students must be employed or have a family member who is employed with a company that is a member of the Columbus Area Human Resources Association.  Students must be majoring in a Business or Human Resources program of study.  Please see attachment for additional information.  Scholarship applications are due no later than March 31st


    If you have not had a chance to renew your CAHRA membership, please do so ASAP.  If we have not received your membership renewal by March 1st , you will be contacted.  A Membership Renewal form is attached.  If you are a SHRM Member, no fees are due; otherwise, membership is $50.  Please return renewal forms to Kathryn Ackman, CAHRA c/o NPPD, PO Box 499, Columbus NE  68602. 

    As an incentive to attend CAHRA Meetings and join a committee, every time you attend a CAHRA meeting your name will go into the hat and if you participate on a committee, your name will be put in twice.  All names will go into a drawing and if your name is drawn, CAHRA will pay your State Conference Registration fee. 

    Members are encouraged to bring a guest to the monthly meetings.  Guests who attend three CAHRA meetings throughout the year will automatically become a CAHRA member for the remainder of the year at no additional charge.  


    In order to retain your certification, members are responsible for entering their own certification credits for SHRM and HRCI.  Information will be provided at the meetings.  Deb will send out certificates for meetings attended in 2016.  Andra Vandenberg volunteered to be our Certification Chair.  Thank you Andra!


    A brief discussion was held regarding if CAHRA should be using social media such as Twitter or Facebook.  We’ll possibly look into this more in the future.    Don’t forget to check out the CAHRA website at .


    “I-9 Updates” was presented by Jessie Feinstein from Jackson Lewis.  Jessie’s presentation focused on the new Form I-9 released by USCIS on November 14, 2016.  All employers must use the new Form I-9 effective January 22, 2017.  Jessie’s presentation was very informative and reviewed overall I-9 compliance pointers.   

    Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 16 at 11:30am at Valentino’s.  The March meeting  “The Top 10 Labor & Employment Law Action Items Employers Should Consider in 2017” will be sponsored by Jackson Lewis.
