June 2018 Meeting Minutes

    CAHRA Monthly Meeting – June 21, 2018


    There were 24 members and 2 guests in attendance at the June meeting.  The meeting was held at Valentino’s Restaurant in Columbus. 

    TREASURER’S REPORT – Doris Wemhoff

    • The Treasurer report for June is attached. 


      PRESIDENT’S REPORTAmanda Henry, President

    • A motion was made to approve the minutes from the May meeting by Kristel Hall and seconded by Jon Rauner.   
    • Amanda reported that the Board is working on changes to bylaws.   
    • Heidi Elliott, Scholarship Chair, announced the winners of the CAHRA scholarships:  Jennifer Heesacker and Jessica Matson.  Both will be majoring in business with an emphasis in HR.  Jenny Heesacker was introduced to the members at this meeting. 
    • Amanda reminded everyone that the deadline for the SHRM $495 scholarship was next Friday.
    • Further discussion was held regarding our HR 101 Event which will be free and open to the public, targeting small businesses in and around the Columbus area.  We are tentatively planning a morning session which will include three 1-hour sessions so that participants can participate in as much or as little as they choose.  This meeting will be in October.  Plans are to host the meeting at CCC.
    • Amanda announced the State HR Conference which will be held 8/23-24 at LaVista.  Attendees and committee members get their name entered into a drawing and the winner will receive a free registration.  The more you attend or participate, the better your chances. 
    • Other notes: 
      • Amanda is serving on the Advisory Board at CHS.
      • We are officially tax exempt.
      • Membership discussed paying for member lunches if they’re going to join CAHRA. 
      • Someone asked about ADA compliance for websites.  Scott M to ask the State Legislative Director.


        LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE REPORTPresented by Scott Messersmith

    • Specific legislation that may impact HR addressed in 2 recent DOL opinion letters.  Travel time and Medically-required rest breaks are explored at length by the DOL.  Scott will include these items along with the legislative report from Chad Richter, State Legislative Director, in the minutes.

      MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT - Teresa Black and Nicole Kracl

    • No report



    • Andra announced this meeting has been approved for CEUs.  Certificates available.  She will also give an update on the SHRM recertification process at the next meeting, as the deadline is coming up this fall for those who became certified 3 years ago.
    • In order to retain your certification, members are responsible for entering their own certification credits for SHRM and HRCI.  If you need certification credits, please contact Andra Vandenberg at .  



    • Kristel reported an uptick in views on the CAHRA webpage based on our last meeting and photo.  Amanda suggested a private page for CAHRA members to post questions or comments. 
    • As was done in 2017, we will continue to offer incentives to increase participation.  We are reviewing at every time you “Like” or “Share” a Facebook post on the CAHRA Page, your name will go into a drawing to be held later on in the year.  The same is true for every time you attend a CAHRA Meeting or serve as a Committee Chair or as an Officer.  If your name is drawn, CAHRA will pay your SHRM State Conference Registration fee if your employer will not pay for it. 


    PROGRAMS – Jon Rauner & Kara Asmus

    • The June program, “Should We Talk About Suicide?” was presented by Donna Wolfe and Andres Sandoval from NE Suicide Prevention Coalition.  A huge thank you to Julie Luther form Advance Services Inc for sponsoring our meeting.
